PubliBike goes into cheese production!

Mid-July 2022, PubliBike moved its servers to a new data center in Gais in Appenzell Ausserrhoden: the greenest and most innovative data center in Switzerland. We are delighted and proud of this ecological and technical implementation!

Other data centers use natural electricity or photovoltaic systems, but the data center in Gais has additional advantages.

For short power outages, it uses "flywheels" instead of UPS (uninterruptible power supply) with batteries. In addition, it uses an adiabatic cooling system that sprays water from a rainwater and groundwater system into the outside air circuit. The hot air from the servers and other network devices is not exhausted by roof fans, as is usually the case, but redirected to the annex house, a cheese factory. This warm air is then used to make cheese!

Pilot Project - Report Bike Found

We are currently conducting a pilot project in the networks Zurich and Bern to facilitate the process of reporting abandoned bikes.

On some of our bikes, you’ll find a QR code that lets you easily report the bike. After scanning the QR code, a form will open where you can fill in all the information about the bike. This information will help us to find and retrieve the bike faster.

Please BE CAREFUL, it might be a bike in an "intermediate stop" - you should only report a bike that has been left outside a station for a while. If there is no sticker with a QR code on the bike, you can simply call our Hotline 0800 004 317) or write to us at velo@publibike-service.ch.

Thanks much for your support!

Partial Reopening of the Lausanne-Morges Network

We have now reached phase 3 of the gradual reopening of the Lausanne-Morges network. After the implementation of phase 2 at the beginning of October, we are now in a position to open almost the entire Lausanne-Morges network. Namely, we can add 15 new stations to the 18 already in service.

However, we still have to leave six stations closed - these stations were most impacted this summer and are therefore more likely to be vandalized again.

Starting today, Monday, November 2, 2020, we are reopening the following stations:

  • Ouchy (Place de la Navigation, Lausanne)
  • Grand-Rive (Avenue de Rhodanie 40, Lausanne)
  • Paudex (Route du Lac, Paudex)
  • Lausanne Gare CFF Nord (Avenue de la Gare, Lausanne)
  • Place de l’Europe (Place Centrale, Lausanne)
  • Chauderon (Place Chauderon 11, Lausanne)
  • Riponne (Place de la Riponne 7, Lausanne)
  • Mirabeau (Avenue de la Gare 12A, Lausanne)
  • Gracieuse (Avenue de Lonay, Morges)
  • Dufour (Place Dufour, Morges)
  • Temple (Grand-Rue, Morges)
  • Casino (Place du Casino, Morges)
  • Préverenges (Route de Genève, Préverenges)
  • Sablon (Rue Centrale, Morges)
  • Cerisaie (Avenue du Tir Fédéral 88, Ecublens)

For now, the following stations remain closed:

  • Place du Marché (Rue du Midi, Renens)
  • Longemalle (Avenue de Longemalle, Renens)
  • Halte de Malley (Avenue du Chablais, Prilly)
  • Croset (Route du Bois 29a, Ecublens)
  • Gare de Renens (Avenue d’Epenex 1, Chavannes-près-Renens)
  • Prilly-Centre (Route de Cossonay 28, Prilly)

These stations are out of service: Penalties will be applied if you return bikes to one of these inactive stations.

We thank you for your understanding and wish you pleasant rides with PubliBike!

Shared mobility is on-trend

Open the app, unlock your bike, and off you go. But a few simple steps for the customer mean sophisticated logistics and regular maintenance for PubliBike. A great deal of passion for cycling goes into operating eight networks across Switzerland, with 500 stations and 5,000 bikes. A look behind the scenes in Berne.

On warmer days, up to 200 bicycles flock to the stations at the Aare bathing areas in Berne. “We didn’t expect this clustering when we designed the network. It’s because of the topography of the city of Berne. Nobody wants to pedal uphill; downhill is easy and fast.” Christoph Blaser, COO of PubliBike, goes on to explain that the situation is somewhat different in Zurich, the second largest PubliBike network with 160 stations: “There are no comparable hotspots in Zurich.” PubliBike has now increased the number of stations in the city of Berne to 200. “It was a very steep learning curve. We have adapted our processes, the logistics and the IT behind them, and worked continuously to enhance them. We now know our network’s characteristics pretty well, and we’re much further along than we were at our launch two and a half years ago.” Information technology is the keystone of the entire bike hire system. PubliBike has invested heavily in IT and logistics, the app (Google or App Store) and the bike hire process.

Up to 200 batteries changed per day

This is exactly the view of Tim Basler, Operations Manager of the bike hire system at the Competence Centre for Work (KA), who is responsible for ensuring that operations run smoothly. The KA supports people without training or employment in their professional and social integration. The KA is part of the Social Welfare Office of the City of Berne. Six KA employees and 40 jobseekers are currently working for PubliBike. In the workshop, they repair 20 to 60 bikes and swap 150 to 200 batteries every day.

A passion for the work

The logistics staff are out and about, either in large transport vehicles or on specially designed e-bikes with trailers, collecting bikes, replacing batteries, repairing emergencies and faults, and redistributing bikes between the different stations. The logistics takes a lot of work, as Tim Basler explains. “The workshop is now well organized and the processes have been optimized. It’s much harder to plan the logistics of redistributing the bikes. When the weather is sunny, over 6,000 trips are made in Berne every day. We have to be very flexible when planning deployment.” Tim Basler is passionate about his work. As a dedicated cyclist who has been involved in the bicycle industry for a long time, he enjoys working with people from a wide variety of cultures and social backgrounds: “It’s meaningful work: bike hire is a cool thing, and it’s fun to work with people who enjoy making a difference through their job. I also like IT, so it’s the perfect combination.”

Bike hype isn’t the whole story

Some jobseekers are so enthusiastic that they hardly want to take breaks. One such person is Kidanemariam Amanuel. He has been with the KA for just four months and is already very experienced. The 30-year-old enjoys riding around with the trailer and delivering the batteries. Sometimes he is able to help customers if they have a question at the station. He reports any damage to the workshop immediately on his mobile phone.

According to Christoph Blaser, shared mobility is on-trend. This is why he sees great potential for PubliBike, and not just because of the coronavirus-related bike hype. But it’s hard to make a profit with bike sharing (InnoPodcast with Markus Bacher). PubliBike took the first step in this direction in June 2020. Every trip must now be paid for, and it is not possible to hire a second bike free of charge using the same subscription. This has currently reduced the number of trips somewhat, although it has improved overall revenue, as expected. And the KA logistics team still has its hands full with work. Every day.

Reopening of the Fribourg network

We are pleased to be able to reopen the Fribourg network as of today, Monday, September 14, 2020.

The 2 stations "Bourgknecht" and "Schoenberg", which have remained closed until now, will be put back into service!

After some weeks of partial closure due to vandalism, our measures (reduced number of open stations and supervision of stations and bicycles) have borne fruit.

Measures are being studied, in collaboration with the police, to deal with vandalism in the best possible way in the future. In collaboration with the Agglomeration of Fribourg, we look forward to further developing the Fribourg network. On this occasion, we are pleased to inform you that we will extend the network from 23 to 35 stations by the end of the year!

Once again, we would like to thank you for your understanding and support during this period.

PubliBike is integrated in the ZüriMobil app

With the new ZüriMobil app, the Stadt Zürich is launching a multimodal app that provides clear access to the wide range of mobility services. #PubliBike is also part of it.

In addition, various means of transport will be offered at special stations as part of a pilot test. The evaluation of customer use will show whether these stations will be integrated as a fixed component of the city's mobility network in the future. The first ZüriMobil station is located at the Flurstrasse stop in Zurich Altstetten. The installation of further stations is currently being examined.

This will allow passengers to switch back and forth between PubliBike and other means of transport. This makes travelling even easier!

The "Région de Nyon" network is extended to 27 sites this year, then to 50 in 2021.

"This is a significant move in the direction of sustainable mobility," said Gérald Cretegny, President of the Région de Nyon, before cutting the ribbon with the leaders of the neighbouring municipalities and the CEO of PubliBike.

If you live in the Nyon Region and would like to try out our bikes, a promo code is available for you at regiondenyon.ch/velos. It is only accessible to residents of the member municipalities of the Nyon Region.

Today, bicycle is honoured! In 2018, the United Nations General Assembly declared 3 June as World Bicycle Day.

The United Nations recognized “the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle, which has been in use for two centuries, and that it is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transport”.

With this act, the organization recognizes the contribution of the bicycle to the 17 United Nations sustainable development goals.

The Lugano-Malcantone network is growing

The Lugano-Malcantone PubliBike network is being expanded from 39 to 45 stations. The following stations will be added to the Lugano-Malcantone PubliBike: Parco Ciani, Via Loco, Lanchetta, Via Vignola, Davesco-Via Vecchio Tram. The Lamone-Cadempino FFS station will be set up at a later date.

The new stations will be put into operation as of 15 May 2020.

Customers will then be able to use 400 bikes from 45 stations in the Lugano region. Half of the bicycles are e-bikes. To date, about 220,000 trips have been registered on this network. The Lugano network received a full upgrade in 2017 and was subsequently extended to Lower Malcantone and constantly expanded. PubliBike plans the locations of the stations not only together with the municipalities, but also with companies. The latter can apply for locations if they wish to promote soft mobility among their employees.

In these unusual times, bike sharing is a popular addition to local public transport. The bikes are systematically sanitized in the PubliBike workshop. We nevertheless advise that you wash or sanitize your hands thoroughly before and after cycling.

Important software update

The locks on our bikes will soon be completely updated. During the month of May, the bikes will be updated one after the other, between 23:00 and 6:00. It is therefore possible that during this time slot, some bikes may not be available.

This update will allow our bikes to lock and unlock in a much faster way and will also ensure greater system stability.

If you see this picture on the lock, the easiest thing to do is to go to the next station. The bike is doing the update, the bikes of the same station too, you have to let them work!

We thank you for your understanding and wish you a safe ride with PubliBike.

All e-bikes are back in Berne!

The e-bike fleet in Bern is complete again. After a few weeks of interruption we are happy to be able to put our e-bikes back into operation and thank you for your understanding.

At the end of March, the e-bikes had to be removed from the network due to a reduction of employees by our external partner, resulting in restricted service. At the beginning of April, we were able to reintroduce e-bikes gradually. This week, all 800 e-bikes were reintegrated and the network is working normally.

PubliBike's network expands in the Région de Nyon

This year, the PubliBike network in Région de Nyon will double from 13 to 27 stations. In 2021, the network will increase to 50 stations, for a total of 300 bikes, half of them electric.

In addition to the public sites which will be determined with the municipalities, companies can seize the opportunity to have a station if they wish to promote soft mobility of their employees through the sponsorship of a site. This opportunity enables employers to flesh out their mobility plans by offering multimodal options combining, for example, part of the journey by train and part by bikesharing from the train station.

Bikesharing in Corona times - PubliBike as a popular alternative

In cities PubliBike is an alternative to public transport during the Corona crisis. Nevertheless, the number of bike-sharing trips has also fallen because many customers have set up home offices. (Article in German)

Earth Day

Today we celebrate the 50th Earth Day. This day is an opportunity to reflect on solutions to preserve our planet. Sorting, composting, recycling, eating local, favouring public transport and biking are some of the possible solutions in order to protect the environment.

Since the beginning of the outbreak, scientists have noted a significant decrease in environmental pollution and emissions of greenhouse gas. A positive side-effect, therefore, perfect for celebrating the 50th Earth Day today.

Every 22 of April, this day is an opportunity to reflect on solutions to preserve our planet.

In this perspective, bike sharing is an ideal solution to reduce the impact of transport on the environment. Mobile, urban and sustainable, PubliBike is the perfect complement to private and public transport. If you want to measure the impact of your journeys on the climate and compare the different means of transport, go to this page: https://www.energie-umwelt.ch/haus/oeffentlicher-verkehr-mobilitaet/mobility-impact

If you too want to make a gesture for the environment and participate in this collective effort, register to PubliBike!

And if not... Here are a few simple "green habits" to apply in your daily life:

  • When you leave a room, turn off the light
  • Turn off the water when you brush your teeth or shave
  • Eat more local food, it's fresh, it's healthy and it reduces gas emissions from transportation. In addition, you are supporting local producers
  • Change your light bulbs with low-energy light bulbs
  • Reduce, reuse, recycle - it's the winning trio!

Actions relating to COVID-19

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, we have put in place several measures to protect our employees and partners, while ensuring the operation of our 8 national networks.

Recently, we also launched an offer for healthcare staff and other healthcare stakeholders. This offer, in addition to public transport, enables them to reach their workplace more easily and efficiently. We have also put in place precise rules for the disinfection of bikes: they are systematically and completely disinfected on entering and leaving the repair workshop. In addition to the handlebars and grips, the lock, activation button, basket, saddle and saddle adjustment, for example, are disinfected. Moreover, we would like to remind you that it is important to disinfect your hands before and after riding a bike!

All of this has been possible thanks to committed and motivated staff, despite a small number of employees and the restrictions imposed by the exceptional situation we are currently experiencing in Switzerland. Some of our employees have been working from home for several weeks now. Our internal organization allows us, in part, to continue our activity from our respective homes. Our thoughts go out to our colleagues and partners in the field and we thank them warmly for their commitment, as well as our colleagues at PostBus and Swiss Post.

We also think of all the people who continue to work every day to keep our country running as smoothly as possible. To all these people, we would like to express our deepest gratitude and thank them for their work.

Healthcare staff on bikes

The University Hospital of Zürich and PubliBike join forces to support the health care staff during their movements.

In combination with the use of public transport, the hospital's healthcare staff can use the PubliBike's bike sharing service. Nurses, doctors, health managers and other hospital staff are thus able to travel faster and more flexibly, especially at night when the public transport service is limited.

With its 5'000 bikes and more than 470 stations in Switzerland (Lugano, Sion, Sierre, Nyon Region, Lausanne-Morges, Fribourg, Berne, Zürich), PubliBike supports the hospital staff.

Availability of bicycles in the Berne network

Unfortunately, we have to set up a restricted service in the Berne network, because our logistics partner puts some employees on leave to protect them against coronavirus, due to cantonal regulations.

What are the consequences for you? We will gradually remove e-bikes from the network and keep only mechanical bikes, which means 800 bikes.

Why e-bikes? Because these are the bikes that require the most maintenance, especially with the replacement of batteries. With fewer employees, we have to concentrate our energy on rebalancing the stations optimally, i.e. avoiding that some stations are empty while others are overloaded. At the same time, we must of course continue to provide complete maintenance of the mechanical bikes (tyre inflation, brake replacement, etc.).

Do you want to help us? We are currently doing everything we can to make sure that you don't end up in front of empty stations. If, when you bring your bike back, you find that the station is already full, bring back your bike at the next station. With this small gesture, you allow our employees on site to optimize their efficiency.

We thank you in advance for your understanding and solidarity. Take care of yourself and have a good journey with PubliBike!

Bike Availability

Providing quality service in these exceptional circumstances is a major challenge. It's only possible thanks to the commitment of our employees and partners. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them, and to make their health one of our priorities.

However, it is possible that in the coming days, some stations may be empty and some e-bikes may not be recharged as quickly as usual. In this case, please go to the next nearest station or check the status of the stations in advance in the app.

We thank you for your understanding.

Take care of yourself and your family.

Learning to ride a bike with PubliBike

In Zurich, refugees learn how to cycle. Some courses use PubliBike's robust and comfortable bikes.

Those who can cycle are more flexible in their everyday lives. That's why the bike riding courses for refugees are very popular in Zurich. The organisation FriendsOnBikes offers them on a voluntary basis. Participants first learn how to ride off the road. As soon as they feel safe enough, they ride on normal roads and practice standard situations such as making turns and changing lanes.

The courses are mainly attended by women, many of them from Africa or Syria. They didn't know how to cycle because there was no real infrastructure in their countries of origin. Or because they were denied cycling for cultural reasons. For them, cycling is more than mobility: in the courses people from different countries, cultures and language regions get to know each other - an opportunity for exchange and integration.

For some of the courses, FriendsOnBikes can use bikes from the PubliBike fleet. "With their small bikes, low access, upright handlebars, adjustable saddle and sturdiness, the PubliBikes are very well suited," says coordinator Bernhard Krauss, who also supervises courses himself. In addition, the refugees learn how to use e-bikes, and there is no need to take care of the bikes. Around 40 women and men have benefited from the courses this year; on average they are firmly in the saddle after six or seven courses.

Züri Velo is being extended

Starting this summer we will expand our network in Zurich. There will be 17 bike sharing stations in the municipalities of Dübendorf, Opfikon, Wallisellen and Kloten.

The service is of particular interest to regular users and represents a valuable addition to the transport chain. With 50% mechanical bicycles and 50% e-bikes, the bike sharing system is particularly attractive and makes it possible to quickly and easily cover the last few miles between the workplace, shopping location, outdoor pool and public transport stop.

In the coming sunny days, this is the perfect opportunity to explore the Zurich area by bike or e-bike.

5 tips and tricks to enjoy PubliBike this summer

That's it, summer is here. Sun, swimming pool, barbecue, outings and walks are on the agenda every day. And summer is also the ideal time to get around town easily and quickly with PubliBike! Discover our 5 simple and effective tips to make the most of your freedom on two wheels during these sunny weeks.

1. Your loyal companion

Whether it is for a trip on Monday morning, an outing on Sunday afternoon or a nighttime break, PubliBike is available for you every day, 24 hours a day. And this, in our 8 networks in Switzerland! Our app lets you locate the nearest stations and find out how many bikes and e-bikes are available. The map is on our website too.

Our first tip for you is simple: open our app (or go to our website) and check where the nearest station is located. Our bicycles and e-bikes are waiting for you, no matter what time you go there.

2. Your registration in no time at all

To create a PubliBike account, you will need to insert a payment method. We accept credit cards (VISA / MasterCard) or PostFinance debit cards.

Second tip: before you register, have your payment method handy. That way you'll save time.

You can register at any time. If you spontaneously decide to join our PubliBike family, you will have to wait five minutes between your registration and your first bike loan. That's how long it will take for our system to recognize a new user and transmit the info to the station where you are.

Our bikes, your choice: you can stop where you want, when you want.

3. A moment for yourself alone

Would you like to take a break by the lake? Eat ice cream in your favorite gelateria? Have an iced coffee with friends? With PubliBike, you can make intermediate stops with ease. All you have to do is manually close the lock until you hear a click when you reach your resting spot. The pause symbol will appear on the lock display. This means that the bike is reserved for you and no other user will be able to unlock it. When you want to ride again, simply open the lock again by pressing the grey button and holding your means of access (via our PubliBike app or with your SwissPass previously registered via our website).

Our third recommendation? Check and see if a PubliBike station is nearby. If you close the lock while your bike is near a station, the lock will communicate with the station, which thinks you've returned the bike and will end your ride. You can enjoy your time, then pick up a bike at the station whenever you want to start a new ride.

4. Your free half-hour

Since the beginning of the year, we have been offering you monthly subscriptions in addition to our annual subscriptions. They work the same way as Netflix or Spotify and allow you to use our system in a flexible way. And so our fourth tip is very simple and you will probably have already thought about it: if you ride our bikes and e-bikes frequently, choose an EasyBike or FreeBike monthly subscription. With an EasyBike, the first half hour is offered to you for each trip made with a normal bike. If you prefer to borrow e-bikes, the FreeBike subscription will be more suitable for your needs. With a FreeBike, the first 30 minutes are free, whether you borrow a mechanical bike or an e-bike.

5. Your support at hand

An accident? A problem? A stolen bike? We are here for you. Have you ever visited our YouTube channel? Read our FAQs?

In case you still haven't found answers to your questions, our final piece of advice is to contact our hotline at 058 453 50 50 50. Our customer service is available every day from 6am to 7pm and in 4 languages (French, English, German, Italian).

PubliBike wishes you a great summer!

The Agglo Fribourg-Freiburg network is expanding

The PubliBike Agglo Fribourg-Freiburg network was expanded from 9 to 21 stations.

Summer is here

This year, summer temps arrived later than expected. But now that sunny days have returned, chilling during the long-awaited summer evenings, diving in cool waters or eating a delicious ice cream are activities which can be enjoyed again. Why not experience all these things in a new city?

For me, city trips usually mean traveling abroad. But Switzerland also has many beautiful cities. Let's take a closer look at one of them: Zurich.

The closer you get to summer, the more you hear and read the motto «Outside at home». Nature literally invites us to spend more time outdoors. The trees shine in rich green, the temperatures make us want to linger and the restaurants and bars with outside terraces have definitely hit the jackpot and won a favourite place in our hearts.

This time, as a member of Hotelcard*, I chose to stay at the Four Points by Sheraton Sihlcity because it is beautiful and modern, close to a large park and still relatively centrally located. Additionally, the PubliBike station «Utoplatz» of the «Züri Velo» network is within walking distance.

In addition to various shops, the nearby Sihlcity is home to restaurants, a fitness center and a cinema. An Italian gelato is a must while going on a shopping spree. We stop at Leonardo, a family business founded by Leonardo Perizzato.

With its large meadow, the park «Allmend» offers the perfect place for a cosy aperitif on a picnic blanket. The first small hunger is satisfied and the late afternoon sun can be enjoyed to the fullest. Located directly on the Sihl, the Fork & Bottle has a cosy terrace and offers various craft beers as well as a large selection of burgers.

With full bellies and with sun-kissed skin, we bike back to the hotel and end the evening with a drink before we fall into the soft hotel beds.

Yellow and black on the way

On Saturday, 25 May 2019, the cup ceremony took place at the Stade de Suisse in Bern and was celebrated extensively. There was a special surprise during the half-time break.

It's been 121 years since the story of Yellow and Black first started. On 14 March 1898, four high school students founded FC Young Boys. The club name Young Boys was derived from the then very popular Basler club Old Boys, and the club colours yellow and black were adopted.

Entry of the 13 championship bicycles during the half-time break on 25.5.2019

More than 100 years later, the BSC Young Boys are celebrating the 13th championship title in their long football history. On Saturday, 25 May 2019, the cup ceremony took place at the Stade de Suisse in Bern and was celebrated extensively. There was a special surprise during the half-time break. From among the most loyal fans of the season, 13 people were drawn by lottery to receive a signed championship jersey and were allowed to ride to the stadium on PubliBike's championship bikes. We congratulate the BSC Young Boys on the 13th championship title and are happy about the cooperation as well as about the 13 yellow-black championship bikes, which will be rolling in the «Velo Bern» network from now on.

A long tradition

I still remember it very well. For me, the trip to the BEA has always been one of the highlights of the year: going there with public transport, the Ferris Wheel (even if most of the time, I only admired it from the ground), watching how the Berlin balls, as well as all the works of art made of vegetables in the Green Centre, are made.

And all this isn't even a fraction of what there is to see at the BEA - aptly formulated for me on the website «Unforgettable moments».

Ferris wheel at the BEA

Every year, more than 300'000 visitors come to the fair, which opened its doors for the first time on September 1st 1951. A large audience is once again expected this year. From Friday, April 26 to Sunday, May 5 2019, there will be many attractions, innovations and traditions to discover every day from 9 am to 6 pm, such as the BEA Horse. Night owls will also get their money's worth. Until 0.30 am there will be a bar and a festival. On Fridays and Saturdays, it can even be celebrated until 3.30 am.

Bern's largest shopping paradise

As a child, shopping was of secondary importance to me and yet, I have always been fascinated by all the whirlpools, garden furniture, coffee machines and everything else on display. In almost 1'000 shops or stands, you will get advice, you will get the opportunity to test or compare new products and profit from attractive discounts. All that comes with the advantage that everything can be found in one place for 10 days: on the BEA Expo grounds in Bern.

Shopping paradise BEA

What does PubliBike have to do with the BEA?

While reading, you might have wondered what the BEA has to do with PubliBike or vice versa. Directly left after the main entrance on the open-air ground, you will find us during the 10 days at our PubliBike stand. We will be happy to answer your questions and you will get the chance to benefit from special offers during the BEA. At PubliBike's «Guisanplatz» station, we will also support you live on site during the rental process and give you tips and tricks that you may not yet know. Of course, you can also go to the BEA by bike or e-bike thanks to our «Velo Bern» network. As a new customer, you can do this during the BEA with the promocode GOBEA19 (during 7 days, the first 30 minutes per trip are free of charge). Did PubliBike convince you? Benefit from an other 10% discount on your annual subscription.

The Lugano-Malcantone network extends

The PubliBike Lugano-Malcantone network will be further expanded from 31 to 38 stations. Seven new workstations will be operational on 29 March.

By December 2017, PubliBike had modernised the Lugano-Paradiso network by adding 50% e-bikes. Subsequently, the network was extended to Lower Malcantone. In addition to the 25 stations already operating in December 2018, 6 stations were put into operation: Lambertenghi, Piazza Molino Nuovo, Via Ginevra, Massagno, Viale dei Faggi and Viganello. On 29 March 2019, the following stations will be inaugurated: Piazza Manzoni, Via Beltramina, Via Ceresio, Via Crocetta, Via Ferri, Ospedale Italiano and Paradiso SBB. 38 stations and 208 bicycles will be available to customers in the Lugano-Malcantone network.

Happy birthday "Züri Velo"

"Züri Velo" has grown to 112 stations and 1400 bikes in its first year. Since April 2018, customers have made around 270,000 trips.

The «Züri Velo» network has been continuously expanded since its opening on 6 April 2018. Currently, 1400 bicycles are available to customers at 112 stations. With 150 stations and 2250 bikes, of which 1200 are e-bikes, the city network will be complete by summer 2019. In the first year of operation, users took more than 270,000 rides, which corresponds to approximately 700,000 kilometers. Twenty employees of the Social Services and Enterprises of the City of Zurich (SEB) are responsible for maintaining the network on behalf of PubliBike.

Celebrating spring in the city!

Now that the days are warmer again, the idea of using your bike more often doesn't seem completely out of place to you either? Whether you are a complete newcomer to the cycling scene or a seasoned bike fanatic, come join us at the Urban Bike Festival, where everything revolves around bikes.

It makes no difference if you belong to Generation Z, Y or X, since the programme is as varied as the different generations. Let yourself be inspired by everything cycling and maybe you'll soon be getting in the saddle more often too.

Press conference at the opening of the «Züri Velo» network a year ago

Last year's Urban Bike Festival was a very special moment for the PubliBike family. We were looking forward to it for a long time and this day definitely left a lasting impression in the biking world: It was the official opening of the bike sharing network «Züri Velo». In other words, there is also a birthday to celebrate: the first year of «Züri Velo».

What awaits you at the Urban Bike Festival?
Many specialists in the field of bikes and bike accessories are waiting for you on the grounds near the Schiffbau and Turbinenplatz. A few cool stunts are of course not to be missed. The world famous bike acrobat Danny MacAskill will once again give you goose bumps this year with his impressive bike stunts. His career started exactly 10 years ago in April 2019 with the video «Inspired Bicycles».

Danny MacAskill with his Drop and Roll Show

Of course, good food and drink are an integral part of such a festival. Have you ever had a cappuccino made with pedal power? Or would a juicy hamburger score more points with you? That and many other culinary delights await you again this year.

«Give the people some of your time...» Steve Pat
In keeping with the quote Steve Pat once gave to the bike acrobat Danny MacAskill, we would like to give you some of our time and answer all your questions about bike sharing: come by our booth at Turbinenplatz at the Urban Bike Festival. We are looking forward to seeing you!

The story of a PubliBike station

There are already over 300 stations throughout Switzerland where you can borrow a bike or e-bike. But how long does it take for a station to actually be ready and why are there places in a network without a station?

Thomas Hug, site manager at PubliBike, works closely with the other divisions to clarify all these questions.

A good location - actively used and with a lot of potential - is one of the key factors whether a bike sharing network is successful or not. Another key to success is the density of a network: the denser the network, the greater the chance of success. If stations are located close to many popular locations, our customers have a convenient way of moving around without gaps. Ideally, a station should be located every 200 to 300 meters. PubliBike's densest and largest networks are in Zurich with the "Züri Velo" network, and in Berne with the "Velo Bern" network.

Thomas must therefore identify such potential locations in consultation with the city. How will they be found? Simple indicators are locations that are already well-placed or popular, such as public transport stops, tourist attractions or places where many people work and/or live. A good example in the "Velo Bern" network would be the Rosengarten, which is visited by lots of tourists and locals. In the "Züri Velo" network it would be Hardbrücke, as many people live and work here. Ideally, a lot of people would live near a potential PubliBike station, and they would ride their bikes away from the station, and other people would work there and ride their bikes to the station.

What steps are taken before putting a location into operation?

  • Analyse the potential using a geo-information system
Criterion: number of inhabitants and jobs within a radius of 300 metres
  • Mark the potential locations on a map.
  • Inspect and check the marked locations on site together with the people in charge from the city.
Criterion: where is there room for a station and does the location make sense?
  • Submit the building permit application for the stations to the city or municipality.
  • The city issues a permit, or if necessary, processes objections to the construction.
  • Mark the ground for the future station
  • Print the signage for the future totem
Info: Location name, how it works and sponsors of the network
  • "Construct" the new PubliBike station with the totem
  • Enter the station in the system so that it also appears on the PubliBike website and app.
  • Add bikes and e-bikes to the new station
  • Collect experience on how the new bike sharing network works

A weekend on two wheels

The last late summer days are over and autumn has arrived. Before time flies far too quickly again, I would like to take full advantage of the sunny autumn days. To do that, you don't have to travel far at all.

We decided to enjoy the weekend in Zurich, where everything is gathered in one place. Enjoy the tranquility of the lake without giving up the advantages of a big city.

Bern and Zurich are only about an hour by train. The fastest and most flexible way to get to the station in Bern is by bike. After work, I ride over the Kornhausbrücke bridge to Bern station full of expectations. My dear friend is already waiting for me at the tracks. Together with a small aperitif, we are ready for our girls' weekend. The hour flies by and the loudspeaker announcement says "next stop Zurich main station".

The prices in Zurich are a bit higher than we are used to in Bern. That's why I'm glad that I can benefit from a 50% discount with my hotel card in selected hotels. We made up our minds for the Altstadt Hotel. Checked in at the hotel, all geared up and ready for dinner, we walk off. Next stop, the Sushi-Bar Barfüsser in Niederdorf in Zurich.

After a lovely dinner, we end the evening with a good cocktail. Strolling back towards the hotel, we come across the Baltho Bar, which offers a great selection of drinks. After the nightcap, it is time to go back to the hotel.

In order to really enjoy the sunny Saturday, we decide to go to the Babus Bakery for breakfast at 9 o'clock. To shorten the way a little we decide for an E-Bike from "Züri Velo", which takes us to the station Sihlporte within 6 minutes. From there it is a stone's throw to the Babus Bakery, where we enjoy fresh pancakes and good coffee in a cosy atmosphere. We end the day with shopping and sightseeing through Zurich before heading back to the bike capital Bern.

Back to work – at the peak of fitness!

September is here! The holidays are already over and this year, we can say that we had a truly beautiful summer. We hope that your batteries are fully recharged and that you're keen to devote some time to sports once you return to work!

Do some sport – YES, but …

As soon as you go back to work, you're usually faced with a series of new challenges – not only in the office, but elsewhere too!

"That yoga course on Thursdays looks very tempting, but what with Charlotte's piano lesson on Monday, the ironing to do on Tuesday, Tom's football training on Wednesday, an after-work get-together with friends or colleagues on one Thursday each month … and so on ... there's not much free time left! So, YES, do some sport – but when???"

So that means you're back to square one: "What can I possibly do to lose those two kilos that mysteriously appeared this summer, even though I was so careful to choose the grilled chicken breast instead of the full-fat sausages?? All right, to be fair, I admit that I maybe added a spot of sauce … well, quite a lot … and perhaps I went overboard on the desserts …"

And then, after just a few weeks back at work, you give up hope and tell yourself that you'll finally do something about sport – in January.

After all, the month for good resolutions is January, not September – isn't it?!

Now, did you know that there's no need to spend hours on the treadmill to be in good health and feel fit? In fact, all that's required is to practice a regular sporting activity.

The World Health Organization recommends adults to spend at least 150 minutes during each week on a moderately intensive endurance activity, in periods of no less than 10 minutes.

That changes everything, don't you think?

What about riding a bike?

So what's the solution? Bike to work! And – guess what? This category of activity includes riding an e-bike!

What's more, the timing is excellent now that PubliBike is available more or less everywhere in Switzerland. We're sure that an e-bike is waiting for you near your home or your office.

To find out, take a look at the network map here and to learn how it works.

So exactly how do I go about it?

If you ride a bike just twice a day for only ten minutes, from Monday to Friday, you will already clock up 100 minutes of moderately intensive endurance activity.

If your outward journey takes 15 minutes, you will already have reached 150 minutes per week.

And if you add in a short ride by the lakeside at the weekend, you'll actually be over the minimum – with no need to change your schedule!

It's quite difficult to give an exact number for the calories that you'll burn, because that depends on your gender, age, height and weight. But as a rough guide, for someone weighing 60 kg, 20 minutes of riding an e-bike will burn about 135 kcal, or the equivalent of one bar of dark chocolate or two average-sized pears.

Someone weighing 80kg who rides an e-bike for an average of 30 minutes per day will burn about 270 calories, equivalent to two average-sized bananas or three bars of milk chocolate.

In addition, try to eat a more healthy diet by varying your food and reducing sugars and "bad" fats. Nowadays, there are also plenty of websites, apps and Instagram accounts to give you ideas on recipes that are easy to make. Here's our absolute favourite.

So there are no longer any excuses for putting good resolutions off until January: hop onto your #PubliBike and go back to work at the peak of fitness!

A summer’s day in Sion with PubliBike

The capital of Valais is known as Switzerland’s sunniest town, so what better opportunity to discover it than a summer’s day? Rent a bike from PubliBike and set off on a refreshing trip that will immerse you in medieval history and a subterranean lake 70 metres below the surface…

Sion railway station is where your journey begins. Choose a bike from the adjacent station and saddle up for a day of discoveries in the heart of Valais! A word of advice to anyone with sensitive legs: when it comes to climbing the steep hills of Sion, an e-bike may be a lifesaver...

See the sights of the medieval city: the cathedral, the town hall and the Witches’ Tower

Just a short distance away, the medieval Old Town is your first destination. A number of historic gems await you here, including the Cathedral of Our Lady of Sion, the town hall and the Witches’ Tower – the last trace of the old city fortifications. Once you’ve admired these monuments, take a break in one of the Old Town’s picturesque cafés before continuing your ride towards the Valère Basilica.

Tackling the two landmarks of Sion: Valère and Tourbillon

It’s a tough climb but well worth the effort! In this 12th century basilica, you’ll find the world’s oldest playable organ, the Valais History Museum and a stunning panoramic view from Sion to Martigny! On top of the opposite hill, your next objective reveals itself: the majestic Tourbillon Castle. Since it cannot be accessed by bike, the best option is to make an intermediary stop on the square below the two castles. All you need to do is lock your PubliBike following the instructions and retrieve it after your visit.

A break in a bathing paradise

After all that cultural activity, it’s time to relax! A 15-minute bike ride from the town centre will bring you to a real oasis of fun and freshness known as Domaine Les Iles. You’ll be able to bathe in the turquoise waters of a lake or enjoy one of the site’s many activities (including beach volleyball, trampolining, an Adventure Park and miniature golf). If you fancy a bite to eat, take your pick from the restaurant or one of the fully equipped picnic spots.

Witness the wonders of the deep at the Saint-Léonard underground lake

The final stage will bring you to an extraordinary place, even more refreshing than the last: the Saint-Léonard lake. It takes about 40 minutes to cycle there from the Domaine Les Iles on the way towards Sierre. Once you’ve arrived, go underground and be enchanted by the largest natural and navigable subterranean lake in Europe. A boat ride will reveal the mysteries of this grotto where the temperature is a constant 15℃ - a welcome break from the heat before you start the return journey. If Sion railway station seems too far away, leave your bike at the “Hôpital – CRR” PubliBike station in Sion and take the bus back to the start, reminiscing about all the things you’ve seen under the sun and the ground…

#MidiAutrement – Exploring the «Basse Ville» of Fribourg

Summer, holidays, the sun and shady terraces live... Who wouldn't like to have a lunch break by the water, eat a fresh organic salad made from regional ingredients in the shade of a parasol while spreading your toes under the table?

“Nothing happens, until something moves” (Einstein)

Rent your bike from the PubliBike station at Nyon railway station and pedal gently through the town to Trois-Jetées Beach. Here, you'll discover a fully-fledged beach resort with diving boards, a raft and a paddling pool – and to top it all, a splendid panorama of the Alps. Promenthoux beach at Prangins – truly an oasis of tranquillity – is also worth a detour.

Set off from the PubliBike station at Morges railway station and head for Préverenges. Here, you'll discover a stunning fine-sand beach – one of the largest in the Lake Geneva region! After swimming to your heart's content, saddle up again and ride to Saint-Sulpice with its quaint Romanesque church. All that's left is to pick out your corner of paradise by the water's edge.

Lugano-Malcantone

Sunshine, lush natural surroundings and dolce vita, Italian-style: welcome to Ticino! Fringed with palms and lemon trees, the shores of Lake Lugano offer an ideal setting for walking and swimming. Good news: plenty of PubliBike stations are available for holidaymakers all along the route from Caslano to Lugano via Melide. So saddle up, pedal along the shore and plunge into the water wherever the fancy takes you.

Bern

In Bern, hop on your bike and set off for a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters of the Aare. And after you've been swept along by the turbulent river water, you'll need to take a break at the Mazili swimming pool!

This summer in Bern, try out the locals' favourite sport: swim down the river Aare! Set out from the unspoilt beach at Eichholz on the bank of the Aare, and let the current carry you as far as Marzili – where you will find the capital's most legendary swimming pool. Already time to go back? It's only a short walk to the Helvetiaplatz-Bern station, where a PubliBike bike is waiting for you.

Zurich

The lake, the river Limmat and open-air swimming pools: Zurich offers endless opportunities to plunge into its refreshing waters! The PubliBike «Züri Velo» network is the ideal way to get from one beach to the next.

Water-lovers are sure to be enchanted by Zurich! And thanks to the «Züri Velo» network, you can bike to heavenly beaches in next to no time. If you long to discover these idyllic beaches and many more besides, your best friend is the list of PubliBike stations. Don't forget your sun hat, suntan cream and swimwear ... On your marks, get set – and dive in!

Bern by bike: discover the ideal way to tour the capital

Thanks to the brand-new Velo Bern network, it's easier than ever before to savour the delights of the Federal capital. Here are some routes that will guarantee an unforgettable getaway.

The Old Town: a mediaeval gem

Unless you're thoroughly familiar with the city already, it's impossible to imagine a visit that's worthy of the name if it doesn't include several iconic 'must-see' attractions. What do they have in common? All of them are located close to a Velo Bern station!

Bern's Old Town – classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site – is a superbly preserved mediaeval gem. Well-informed visitors are sure to include the city's emblematic Clock Tower on their itinerary. Every hour on the hour, curious onlookers flock here to marvel at the unusual spectacle of figures set in motion by a mechanism that dates back to the 16th century. Visitors are also admitted to the interior of the tower, where they can see what happens behind the scenes and enjoy an astounding view.

The Federal Palace, Switzerland's parliament building, is another of the city's quintessential icons – and you can bike to it in just a few minutes. Equally unmissable: the bear pit, where you can watch a family of these endearing creatures as they stroll around a spacious compound.

The Rose Garden is a favourite spot to relax for local residents and visitors alike. This is the ideal place to take some time out – and from this privileged position, surrounded by flowerbeds, you can enjoy views of the Old Town and the loop of the river Aare.

Last but not least, knowledge-hungry visitors of all ages will want to include the Museum of Communication on their route. This is a storehouse of historical treasures that also keeps up with cutting-edge technologies and the latest debates.

It's impossible to give a complete list of the city's attractions here, but one thing is certain: if you want to discover them, your best friend is the highly functional Velo Bern network with its excellent coverage!

Shopping malls like no others

Bern's Old Town also invites you to enjoy a somewhat unusual shopping experience. Six kilometres of covered shopping arcades stretch from Kramgasse to Gerechtigkeitsgasse in the heart of the city – so you are protected from the sun and rain as you stroll and browse. You'll notice a special local feature: the vaulted cellars under the buildings on either side of the streets are also used as shops nowadays. Wine, fashion, art galleries … everything is available here, to match every taste and every budget. There's also an extremely colourful market that opens according to a regular schedule.

Not far away is the large Loeb department store, a typically Bernese family-run enterprise. It offers outlets on eight floors with international brands as well as local specialities – and quite a few surprising discoveries!

Here too, you'll have plenty of opportunities to unearth hidden treasures, and you're sure to find inspiration.

A delight on every street corner

Among its many assets, the city of Bern can boast an extraordinary range of bars and restaurants – so many, in fact, that listing them all would take for ever. Nevertheless, here are a few recommendations.

A genuine little 'paradise island', the Schwellenmätteli offers a trio of appealing venues: a terrace that will make you feel glad to be alive, a restaurant devoted to delicious no-frills Italian cuisine, and a lounge that is equally pleasant by day and by night.

For a slightly more upmarket but equally welcoming ambience, the Bellevue offers a taste of the 'good life'. This gastronomic restaurant is something straight out of the Belle Époque – a place where connoisseurs can savour sophisticated cocktails and fine cigars … Or, for those with simpler tastes, a little refreshment at the Bellevue Bar (with superb views, as its name suggests!)

Finally, Gelateria di Berna is the perfect destination for any self-respecting visitor in summertime: three branches at locations across the city, with one and the same golden rule: Italian-style ice cream to die for!

River trip on the Aare

Much prized by locals and holidaymakers alike, an excursion on the river Aare is the final, essential item on this alluring programme.

In this case, we shall opt for the short route with departures from the Schwellenmätteli. You won't need your own watercraft – you can hire one on the spot before you embark on your voyage (preferably as a group). This is a novel and pleasant way to discover the city from an unusual perspective. And to view it from a little distance …. But don't panic! A Velo Bern station awaits you near your arrival point!

Bike sharing: Switzerland ahead of the pack

From being a marginal system just ten years ago, bike sharing has now become an essential feature of most large urban areas and far from being an exception to the rule, Switzerland is now an integral part of the movement.

In recent years, the most urban among us have witnessed the explosion of a new type of two-wheel transportation. In barely a decade, self-service bikes have become a distinct feature of the urban landscape.

Convenient, environmentally-friendly and in line with the needs of the people of the time, bike sharing solutions have experienced exponential growth in recent years, to the extent that the numbers of bikes used for sharing has more than tripled in three years, exceeding 2 million units in 2016. Although the vast majority of these bikes are being ridden on Chinese roads, it’s a global trend and Switzerland is right up there with the leaders! It’s a real revolution we really should take a look at.

It all starts with a little provocation

Bike sharing has been a revolutionary movement since it began. The concept actually dates back to the 1960s and a group of Dutch anarchists, called Provo, who flooded the streets of Amsterdam with white-painted bikes, intended to be used freely and then left for other users afterwards. This great initiative was undoubtedly a bit ahead of its time: with no locks, the bikes quickly disappeared.

New technologies to the rescue

We had to wait more than twenty years for the idea to be made popular again by more serious proponents, using systems that could identify users with magnetic cards. This paved the way for bike sharing as we know it today, based on smartphone apps and geolocation, helping users easily find stations and available bikes.

The rapid development of bike sharing is thus closely linked to technological progress, but its success also owes a great deal to changing mentalities. Environmental concerns have become omnipresent in people’s minds and the model of the private car is experiencing a marked decline.

For all these reasons, bike sharing is now widely adopted, with as many modes of use as there are users. The system appeals to tourists and walkers alike and is incredibly popular with students and commuters.

Complementary systems

There are two main types of bike sharing systems. On the one hand, bikes are borrowed from and returned to fixed stations. This solution is the most widespread. On the other hand, with the “floating bikes” system, available bikes can be located via an app and left wherever the user wants after use.

The solution based on fixed stations has many advantages, particularly in the Swiss market. For example, it’s easier to locate bikes, which will always be in the same place. Plus, if you want to ride in a group, bikes are centralised so you don’t have to go all over the place to find enough of them.

Everything in the right place: the Swiss vision

Last but not least, this system protects the tidy, ordered environment treasured by the residents of Swiss towns and cities. By comparison, China went the other way and opted for a widespread system of floating bikes. A quick look online will show you just how this system has gone wrong: entire streets blocked with hundreds of bikes left lying around and veritable dumping grounds with heaps of abandoned bikes as far as the eye can see, the result of chaotic development. Unthinkable in our country!

Switzerland in the final sprint

With the development of PubliBike’s services, Switzerland now has a major operator in the field: it’s full steam ahead for the widespread deployment of bike sharing here. With fully modernised systems and networks, the introduction of e-bikes and many developments to come, just take a quick look at the PubliBike map of networks and stations (developed after a detailed needs analysis and linked with public transport). This should be enough to convince you that this is the way to go.

The brand new Bernese network has just been opened, and the city of Fribourg is on the starting blocks, with a launch scheduled for 3 July!

28.06.2018

View of La Côte: the most beautiful rides in Nyon

Perfectly situated between Lausanne and Geneva, the town of Nyon is the ideal starting point to discover one of Switzerland’s most beautiful regions. From lakeshore rides and forest trips to terrace strolls and cultural visits, follow the guide and embark on a tailor-made tour à la PubliBike!

Town tour

If Nyon’s surroundings are perfect for walks, the town itself has its fair share of riches and is particularly pleasant to explore by bike. Choose the PubliBike plan that matches your needs, take a look at the instructions on our website and off you go!

Your bike awaits you at the PubliBike station by the railway station. A short ride down the gentle slopes of the Roman town will bring you to the shore of the lake, with a few must-see stops along the way. The Esplanade des Marronniers with its stunning panorama is sure to make you slow down to enjoy the view. It’s also the venue for lots of free events and concerts, listed on the programme. A short detour through the magnificent Conservatory garden is another must and will lead you to the famous plage des Trois Jetées, a perfect introduction to the dolce vita of Nyon. In July and August, the lakeshore sways to the rhythm of the Rive Jazzy, a free festival with an attractive line-up!

Don’t limit yourself to these few essentials; the town of Nyon rewards curious visitors and those with an appetite for adventure!

A lovely town with a beautiful history

Trodden in turn by Roman sandals, the shoes of angry Bernese invaders and the famous mud-soaked boots of Paléo festival-goers, the streets of Nyon are full of historic and cultural treasures, so taking a few moments to explore this eventful past is an ideal starting point.

And you don’t have to go far to do so! Easily accessible in the town, the Roman Museum and the Musée du Léman have plenty to quench your thirst for history. The Roman Museum tells the story of Noviodunum, the name under which the town was founded by Julius Caesar some 2,000 years ago. The Musée du Léman lets you immerse yourself in Europe’s biggest lake, showcasing its wildlife and the history of navigation.

If you’re inspired by this cultural and historic heritage, consider stopping at the Tourist Office to pick up a Museum Pass: this will give you access to all the museums mentioned in this article and many others, all for the modest sum of CHF 12.00!

Ride by the waterside

This wonderful lakeshore outing will take you east towards the municipality of Prangins. After a pleasant ride along the waterfront to the PubliBike station, it’s well worth parking your bike here for a while to enjoy the charming surroundings!

Magnificently developed, the shores of Lake Geneva are full of attractions and have something for everyone. Around the terrace of les Abériaux, lovers of sports, fishing and afternoon drinks gather in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The lounge-like ambiance of La Barcarolle, meanwhile, is perfect for sipping a Spritz and enjoying a spot of relaxation against the backdrop of Promenthoux beach, easily one of the nicest in the region.

And since culture and history are never far away, the magnificent Château de Prangins also houses the western branch of the Swiss National Museum. Don’t miss your chance to visit this showcase of patriotic history in a unique setting, with its sumptuous grounds and a kitchen garden where the vegetables of yesteryear are still grown. Best of all, you can also dine in style there!

Forest trip

Another of the region’s unmissable attractions is the Bois de Chênes nature reserve, a real gem of greenery that can be explored on foot or by bike. It’s a perfect place for a nice ride and we can’t recommend it highly enough. You can get there easily by bike, though it’s quite a climb! Less regular cyclists will appreciate the option to spare their legs by borrowing an e-bike.

Another way to reach the Bois de Chênes is by following the famous Toblerone Trail, named after the iconic anti-tank fortifications along its course. This hiking hotspot is closed to cyclists, but you can find PubliBike stations on both sides of the route!

The wines of La Côte

No inventory of the charms of La Côte, with its “heady” wine-growing heritage, could fail to mention the countless wine cellars. From Château de Duillier to Signy, from Coinsins to Arnex, there are so many places that will delight the most demanding palate. If you’re a real enthusiast, though, make sure you have someone to drive you home!

On your bikes!

Of course, the riches of this region aren’t limited to these few suggestions. If you love riding by the waterside you can easily extend your outing to Gland or, if you wish, reach the networks in Morges or even Lausanne! Eager to sample the pleasures of the thermal baths in neighbouring France? Remember that PubliBike can also be found in Divonne-les-Bains. All in all, remember that this is a region full of museums, natural wonders and impressive castles. So, refer to the list of PubliBike stations and create your own routes to discover this wonderful corner of Switzerland in the most pleasant and enjoyable way!

As announced this summer, PubliBike has developed a revolutionary new system. After several months of hard work, we’ve done it! The first new networks equipped with the new system are now at your disposal. Late this autumn, we have reopened the networks in Lausanne-Morges and Lugano. The modernization of the network in Sion is planned at the beginning of next year. In 2018, PubliBike will also inaugurate the Switzerland biggest bike sharing networks in Bern and Zurich.

With this new PubliBike generation, important new features await you. First, brand new bikes and e-bikes have replaced the old fleet. They are smaller, easier to manoeuvre and specifically developed for bike sharing services. The lock is now integrated, which enables you to make intermediary stops without the need for a docking station. But that’s not all – we also redesigned our website and developed a new application. Available now on the App Store and GooglePlay, it’s your key to unlock the bike. Use the app to pull up a map of the network and view the number of bikes available at each station. You can also rent our bikes, using your SwissPass previously registered in your customer account.

As you can see, PubliBike is now at the cutting edge of technology, featuring a new system and a new fleet. A perfect way to simplify your bike use and relieve your calf muscles! Convinced? Don’t wait any longer and register! And if you were a subscriber on our old system, we will contact you in the coming days to help you access our new bikes!
